What is EQ and Why Does It Matter?

Four years ago, I took a deep dive into the world of Emotional Intelligence when I went through the certification process of the Emotional Capital Report, a leadership and sports performance development tool. And, have been weaving EQ into my coaching services portfolio ever since.

I’ve also experienced firsthand the positive impact of being more aware of my own EQ and where there were areas that I could focus on growth. Oh yes, strengthening EQ can be done, it’s just like going to the gym regularly!!

What is EQ?

It’s the understanding of how emotions affect decision-making and behaviours. And, how to manage these complex interactions positively, which include:

  • Understanding your own emotions (Self Awareness)

  • Ability to manage your emotions with confidence while under pressure (Self Management)

  • Tuning into the experience of others and how they are feeling, with empathy (Social Awareness)

  • Your relationship with others and how you interact (Social Skills)

All of these, together, roll into your ability to be adaptable, respond to life’s challenges or difficult situations as they arise. As your EQ grows the benefits are seen in your personal relationships and working life, such as:

  • By building collaborative and stronger relationships

  • Being able to understand and express personal feelings

  • Communicating clearly, effectively and with empathy

  • Responding positively and with sensitivity to new situations

  • Being more relatable

  • Increased creativity and innovation

  • Growth in your leadership performance; nurturing and inspiring

Have you ever been curious about your own EQ?
